Tony Stubblefield isn’t naive.
DePaul’s newly minted head coach knows that he’s taking over a program that hasn’t been to the NCAA Tournament since 2004.
He also knows that it’s important it to immediately send a message to the rest of college basketball in his first year in Chicago.
“We want to put a competitive team on the floor,” Stubblefield said earlier this week on the College Hoops Today Podcast when asked about his goals for next season. “We want to compete and let people know that we’re here and we’re here to stay for a while.”
DePaul finished 5-14 last season under Dave Leitao and returns just one double-figure scorer in Javon Freeman-Liberty (14.4 points).
The Blue Demons have not finished at .500 or better in Big East play since Jerry Wainwright coached the Blue Demons to a 9-7 record during the 2006-07 season.
