The Breakfast Buffet: Michigan returns home, Seton Hall/St. John’s, Kansas hits the road at Colorado

Who’s hungry for college basketball?

Here’s today’s installment of “The Breakfast Buffet”, a daily column that can be found here every single morning getting you caught up to date on everything that’s happened from the day/night before and everything that’s going to happen in the next 24 hours.

Things To Sample

Michigan returns home to face Indiana
Last week’s sojourn to the Great Northwest featured a pair of double-digit wins for the Wolverines over both Washington and Oregon. Dusty May’s team is now back in Ann Arbor and won’t have to go very far for a few weeks. The Wolverines won’t leave their home state until a game in Columbus against Ohio State on Feb. 8th and will play four of their next five tilts at home, starting with tonight’s game against Indiana. The only road game during this upcoming stretch for Michigan is a trip to East Lansing to take on Michigan State on Jan. 30th.

Seton Hall/St. John’s
A rivalry game at Madison Square Garden? There’s not many better things in college basketball. The Pirates have lost a little bit of the momentum they began Big East play with and will enter tonight’s game on a two-game losing streak while the Red Storm have won four straight games and are starting to hit their stride under Rick Pitino. It feels like we’re starting to get separation in the Big East with UConn and St. John’s looking a cut above the rest. This is the type of game that Seton Hall has to win if it wants to keep pace at the top of the league standings.

Kansas hits the road at Colorado
The Jayhawks put some air back in their tires last week with back-to-back decisive wins over Iowa State and Baylor, but both of those games were in Lawrence. Can this team win on the road in the Big 12? We’re still not so sure and Kansas may be without Bill Self tonight due to illness as the school announced on Monday that he did not accompany the team to Boulder. The Jayhawks are already 0-2 away from Allen Fieldhouse this season in league play thanks to a pair of defeats against UCF and West Virginia, two teams who weren’t picked to finish in the top half of the Big 12. After tonight’s game against the Buffaloes, Kansas will then travel to rival Kansas State on Saturday. It’s going to be an interesting week away from home for the Jayhawks.

On The Side

  • Florida is averaging 94.3 points during its current four-game winning streak entering tonight’s game against LSU in Gainesville.
  • Isiah Harwell is quietly turning a corner for Houston. The 6-6 freshman is averaging nine points off the bench in his last three games while shooting 35 percent from three-point range during that span. Remember the name.
  • UCLA has to do something with its next six games — starting with tonight’s tilt against Purdue at Pauley Pavilion — if it’s going to play in the NCAA Tournament. The Bruins are currently just 12-6 overall, but five of their next six games will be played in Westwood. The one road trip during this stretch? A visit to Oregon, who’s been decimated by injuries to both Jackson Shelstad and Nate Bittle.
  • Prediction: Miami (OH) will suffer its first loss of the season tonight at Kent State.
