The Breakfast Buffet: Michigan has a massive week, Houston/Iowa State, my heart breaks for Richie Saunders

Who’s hungry for college basketball?

Here’s today’s installment of “The Breakfast Buffet”, a daily column that can be found here every single morning getting you caught up to date on everything that’s happened from the day/night before and everything that’s going to happen in the next 24 hours.

Things To Sample

Michigan has a massive week
This is the type of 80-minute stretch that can cement the Wolverines as the top overall seed in the 2026 NCAA Tournament. Dusty May’s squad will travel to Mackey Arena on Tuesday to face Purdue and then go to Washington D.C. to face Duke on Saturday at Capital One Arena. Both the Boilers and Blue Devils are currently projected to be two of the top eight seeds in March Madness. Michigan is currently 24-1 in its second season under Dusty May.

Houston/Iowa State
Just another night in the Big 12? You better believe it. Two teams who are firmly in contention for number one seeds in the NCAA Tournament will do battle tonight at Hilton Coliseum, where the Cyclones are a perfect 14-0 this season. Iowa State picked up an 18-point win on Saturday over Kansas in Ames and it will be interesting to see if it can repeat a similar effort tonight at home against the Cougars. The Cyclones are 2-2 against Houston since Kelvin Sampson’s program joined the Big 12.

My heart breaks for Richie Saunders
This is the dark side of sports. The 6-5 Saunders has worked his tail off during the past few seasons to go from role player to Glue Guy to All-Big 12 player only to see his senior season cut short due to a torn ACL. The season-ending injury happened in Saturday’s game against Colorado and will leave an already thin BYU squad even thinner during the final few weeks of the regular season. Saunders was averaging 18.0 points and 5.8 rebounds before going down against the Buffaloes. His absence will put even more pressure on the Cougars’ all-conference tandem of Rob Wright (18.7 points, 4.9 assists, 3.7 rebounds) and AJ Dybantsa (24.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists) moving forward.

On The Side

  • Florida is now 12-2 this season when Urban Klavzar scores in double figures. Can you say X-Factor?
  • Dylan Darling is averaging 15.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists in St. John’s last three games.
  • I’m officially concerned about Ohio State’s NCAA Tournament chances. The Buckeyes are lacking quality wins and just lost their leading scorer — John Mobley (15.1 points) — for an indefinite time period due to a hand injury.
  • Saint Louis’ Trey Green (12.1 points) has made three or more three-point shots in seven of his last eight games.
  • INSIDE COLLEGE BASKETBALL NOW will air today and every Monday for the rest of the 2025-26 season at 1 PM ET on CBS Sports Network.

Daily Specials

  • Syracuse at Duke
  • Houston at Iowa State
