The Breakfast Buffet: Kansas visits Texas Tech, Hubert Davis, Silas Demary Jr.

Who’s hungry for college basketball?

Here’s today’s installment of “The Breakfast Buffet”, a daily column that can be found here every single morning getting you caught up to date on everything that’s happened from the day/night before and everything that’s going to happen in the next 24 hours.

Mangia!

Things To Sample

Kansas visits Texas Tech
The Jayhawks’ five-game winning streak has them playing their best basketball of the season, but Kansas has still yet to prove that it can beat a really, really good team in a true road environment. That can change tonight in Lubbock against the Red Raiders, who should be extra feisty after falling to UCF on Saturday in Orlando. Other than a one-point win over NC State in Raleigh in December, none of Kansas’ true road wins this season have come against a team that’s a lock to be a high seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Hubert Davis has stabilized North Carolina
The sky was falling a few weeks ago in Chapel Hill when the Tar Heels lost back-to-back games at Stanford and Cal, but a three-game winning streak has quietly gotten everything back on track. That’s a credit to Davis, who has North Carolina at 17-4 entering tonight’s game at home against Syracuse. Six of this team’s final 10 regular season games will be played in Chapel Hill, including matchups against Duke, Louisville, and Clemson. There’s a major window for the Tar Heels to improve their overall resume for the NCAA Tournament prior to the postseason.

Silas Demary Jr. has been very consistent for UConn in Big East play
Tristen Newton 2.0? There are definitely some similarities between he and Demary. The Huskies’ 6-4 point guard has been very steady since UConn began conference play and his presence at the most important position on the floor could very well dictate whether or not this program has a chance to advance to the Final Four for the third time in the last four seasons. In 11 Big East games, Demary is averaging 11.9 points, 7.1 assists, and 4.2 rebounds. His assist-to-turnover ratio during that span? 3.9:1. This guy is the real deal for Dan Hurley’s squad, who’s 20-1 and will next host Xavier on Tuesday.

On The Side

  • Trey McKenney is the long term X-Factor in Michigan’s national title hopes. The 6-4 freshman has scored in double figures off the bench in four straight games for the Wolverines.
  • UCF has a resume. The Knights have now beaten both Texas Tech and Kansas at home to go with a road victory at Texas A&M. Barring an unforeseen collapse, this team should play in the NCAA Tournament.
  • Texas’ Dailyn Swain is averaging 21.1 points and 7.7 rebounds in nine SEC games. This is a potential All-American candidate to monitor for the 2026-27 season.
  • Nick Dorn is on a major heater for Indiana. The lanky forward is averaging 20.3 points in the Hoosiers’ last four games while shooting a ridiculous 20-43 from three-point range during that span.
  • Providence has won the same amount of games in its last two seasons — 21 — as Kim English did in his first year with the Friars in 2023-24.
