The Breakfast Buffet: Baylor Scheierman, Hofstra visits Duke, Javian McCollum

Here’s today’s installment of “The Breakfast Buffet”, a daily column that can be found here every single morning getting you caught up to date on everything that’s happened from the day/night before and everything that’s going to happen in the next 24 hours.

Things To Sample

Baylor Scheierman is playing like an All-American
Add this guy to the list of COVID seniors who are having a major impact this season. Scheierman doesn’t get the same attention as other guys on Creighton like Trey Alexander or Ryan Kalkbrenner, but don’t be fooled: This guy has been the Bluejays’ best player this season. The 6-7 wing is leading Creighton in both scoring (18.6) and rebounding (7.3) while shooting 47.5 percent from the field and 38.6 percent from three-point range. He’s also averaging four assists, which is second-best on the Bluejays behind Alexander (4.9). Greg McDermott’s team is 8-1 and will next face UNLV on Wednesday night in the Jack Jones Classic. Tip off is at 9 PM ET on CBS Sports Network.

Hofstra visits Duke

The nation’s fourth-leading scorer — Tyler Thomas (23.6 points) — leads the Pride into Cameron Indoor Stadium tonight to take on the Blue Devils. It’s the best matchup in a light night for the sport due to finals week. Speedy Claxton’s team is 6-3 and coming off a three-point loss at Saint Louis on Saturday. And Duke? Jon Scheyer’s team is also 6-3, with its best win coming against Michigan State — who is now 4-5 — in the Champions Classic. Keep an eye on Duke freshman Jared McCain, who had a career-high 21 points in Saturday’s win over Charlotte as he stepped into the starting lineup for Tyrese Proctor, who was out with an ankle injury.

Javian McCollum has had no drop off for Oklahoma
Sometimes when a player goes from a mid-major league to a power conference, his production level suffers. That hasn’t been the case for McCollum. After playing the first two years of his college basketball career at Siena, the 6-2 McCollum is now a major reason why Oklahoma is off to a 9-0 start and ranked 11th in the ROTHSTEIN 45. Last season at Siena, McCollum averaged 15.9 points and 3.9 assists. This season at Oklahoma, he’s averaging 14.9 points and 3.2 assists with essentially the same shooting percentages. McCollum is a name to keep an eye on as the Sooners aim to make their final year in the Big 12 a memorable one before leaving for the SEC.

On The Side

  • Was there a point guard in college basketball that played better last week than Memphis’ Jahvon Quinerly? The veteran floor general averaged 22 points, 5.5 assists, and four rebounds in a pair of road wins at VCU and Texas A&M.
  • Two of the best brands in the Big Ten — Michigan and Michigan State — are a combined 9-10.
  • Ole Miss is 5-0 this season in games decided by five points or fewer.
  • In four games this season against power conference opponents, St. John’s is giving up an average of 82.5 points.
  • La Salle — who was picked last in the Atlantic 10 Preseason Poll — is off to an 8-2 start.
