The Breakfast Buffet: Arizona, BYU/UConn, Buzz Williams returns to Marquette

Who’s hungry for college basketball?

Here’s today’s installment of “The Breakfast Buffet”, a daily column that can be found here every single morning getting you caught up to date on everything that’s happened from the day/night before and everything that’s going to happen in the next 24 hours.

Things To Sample

Arizona is building a resume
Friday night’s 69-65 win over UCLA at Intuit Dome in Los Angeles joins a neutral site triumph over Florida in Las Vegas on opening night. Those are two wins that will travel all the way to Selection Sunday. There’s more. The Wildcats will travel to UConn next week, host Auburn in Tucson, face Alabama in Birmingham, and square off with San Diego State in Phoenix before beginning a rugged 18-game Big 12 schedule. Tommy Lloyd has is putting Arizona in position to be a very high seed in the 2026 NCAA Tournament.

BYU/UConn
The Huskies haven’t played a game in TD Garden in Boston since they went on a 30-0 run against Illinois in the 2024 Elite Eight en route to their second straight national title under Dan Hurley. Their return comes against a team in the Cougars that’s on the East Coast in November because of five-star freshman AJ Dybantsa (18.7 points, 7.0 rebounds), who’s a Massachusetts native. This is the first power conference game of the season for UConn, who ripped through its first three opponents by an average of 38.0 points. We’ll know a lot more about both of these teams after this matchup. Expect BYU to be shorthanded after one of its starters — Kennard Davis Jr. (9.0 points) — was arrested on suspicion of DUI earlier this week.

Buzz Williams returns to Marquette

The 53-year old Williams led the Golden Eagles to the NCAA Tournament five times during a six-year stretch as Marquette’s head coach from 2008-14 and today he returns to Milwaukee to lead his current team — Maryland — against his old school in the back end of a home-and-home series. Both teams could use a win of significance as the Golden Eagles were embarrassed last Sunday against Indiana in Chicago and the Terps dropped a home game last Friday to Georgetown in College Park.

On The Side

  • Trey Kaufman-Renn’s 15 rebounds in Purdue’s win over Alabama on Thursday night were a career-high. He previously never grabbed more than 13 boards in a game during his college career.
  • 25 of Kansas’ remaining 28 regular season games will be against power conference opponents.
  • KJ Lewis has a combined 19 rebounds in Georgetown’s last two games entering today’s matchup with Clemson in Washington D.C. Is there a better rebounding guard in the country?
  • The most underrated thing about Virginia Tech’s Neoklis Avdalas? His ball security. The 6-9 point guard has 22 assists and just four turnovers in the Hokies’ first three games.
  • Two programs that were once a major part of the fabric of East Coast basketball — Boston College and Temple — meet today in Philadelphia. The Eagles haven’t been to the NCAA Tournament since 2009 and the Owls haven’t been to March Madness since 2019. Sad.
