Things To Sample
Alex Condon is taking his game to a different level
This guy playing like someone who knows that March is right around the corner. A major part of Florida’s run to last season’s national title, the 6-10 Condon is currently playing some of his best basketball of the season. In the Gators’ last four games, Condon is averaging 17.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists. Todd Golden’s squad will go for its eighth straight win tonight against Texas in Austin.
St. John’s/UConn
The Big East regular season title will likely be decided tonight in Hartford as these two burgeoning rivals meet for the second time this season. The Red Storm won the first meeting between these two teams a few weeks ago at MSG and currently have a one game lead in the loss column in the Big East standings. Tonight’s game is also the last remaining Quad 1 opportunity for the Huskies — who are firmly in the mix to be a number one seed in the NCAA Tournament — during the regular season. St. John’s has won three straight meetings against UConn.
Christian Anderson’s numbers are spiking without JT Toppin
Texas Tech lost one of its All-Americans to a season-ending knee injury, but the other standout on this roster is doing everything he can to make up for Toppin’s absence. In the two games that the Red Raiders have played without do-everything big man, Anderson is averaging 26.0 points, 8.5 assists, and 8.0 rebounds while shooting an impressive 19-32 from the field and 6-14 from three-point range. Texas Tech has won both of those games by an average of 20.0 points. This isn’t going to be the same team without a player like Toppin, but it can still be a different team that’s still a tough out in the NCAA Tournament.
On The Side
- Michigan State’s Jeremy Fears has 56 assists and 10 turnovers in his last five games.
- What has gotten into Billy Richmond? Arkansas’ do-everything utility guy is averaging 22.0 points in his last three games. Prior to this stretch, the 6-6 Richmond hadn’t scored more than 14 points in a game this season. The Razorbacks host Texas A&M tonight in Fayetteville.
- Zayden High is averaging 10.3 points and 8.5 rebounds in the four games that North Carolina has played since Caleb Wilson went out of the lineup with a hand injury.
- Tonight’s game between Santa Clara and Saint Mary’s in Moraga is the biggest game that the Broncos — who are 22-6 and right on the cut line for the NCAA Tournament — have played under Herb Sendek. Tip off is at 11 PM ET on CBS Sports Network.
- Both of San Diego State’s games this week — tonight against Utah State at home and Saturday at New Mexico — are Quad 1 opportunities. The Aztecs are 18-8 and firmly on the bubble.
