Scott Drew is confident that history won’t repeat itself.
Just a little over four months after the cancellation of the 2020 NCAA Tournament, Baylor’s head coach believes despite coronavirus and a global pandemic, college basketball will — at some point — move forward and resume play.
“I know we’re going to have a college basketball season,” Drew said Monday on the College Hoops Today Podcast. “As far as when that season begins, a lot depends on what happens between now and then.”
There’s a lot of questions that need to be answered between now and Nov. 10th — the current date when college basketball is slated to begin — if things are to begin on time.
Many head coaches — most notably Iona’s Rick Pitino — have publicly expressed their desire to delay the November start and not begin play until 2021.
Regardless of when the season starts, Baylor is expected to be one of the top teams in the sport.
The Bears were 26-4 last March prior to the start of the Big 12 Tournament and likely would have been one of the four number one seeds on Selection Sunday.
Two of Baylor’s starting guards — Jared Butler and MaCio Teague — are both currently early entrants in the 2020 NBA Draft. They have until next Monday at 5 p.m. EST to decide whether or not they will return to school.
With both Butler and Teague as projected returnees, the Bears are currently second in the ROTHSTEIN 45.
Baylor will also return four other players — Davion Mitchell, Matthew Mayer, Mark Vital, and Tristan Clark — who averaged double-figure minutes last season.
