So you thought that Hubert Davis’ first head coaching job was his current post at North Carolina?
Guess again.
The Tar Heels’ current head coach was also the head coach of the program’s JV team for seven of the past nine years, something that he says was invaluable in his overall development.
“I couldn’t imagine it,” Davis said Monday on the College Hoops Today Podcast when he was asked if he could see himself as the head coach of North Carolina without the time that he spent as the Tar Heels’ JV coach. “The biggest difference between being an assistant and a head coach is as an assistant you’re only making suggestions. As a head coach you’re making decisions. Even on a much smaller scale on the JV level — I was the JV coach for seven of the last nine years — you’re put in a position to make decisions. I made decisions on rosters. I made decisions on scheduling, rotations, practice plans. I couldn’t imagine where I would be if I didn’t have the role of JV coach here.”
Davis has been an assistant for the past nine years under Roy Williams and was named the head coach of his alma mater on April 5th.
North Carolina is currently ranked 20th in the ROTHSTEIN 45.
