North Carolina is set to promote assistant Hubert Davis to head coach, two separate sources confirmed on Monday.
An official announcement is expected soon.
He will succeed Hall-of-Famer Roy Williams, who retired last week.
The 50-year Davis has coached North Carolina’s JV team, but has never fully ran a program at the Division 1 level.
He was a star player for the Tar Heels from 1988-92 and also played over 10 years in the NBA for six different franchises.
Davis has been an assistant coach with North Carolina since 2012.
The website Inside Carolina first reported that North Carolina’s Board of Trustees was meeting to discuss the hire.
