Frank Martin: I think Seventh Woods is going to have a really good year

Frank Martin has many reasons to be excited for the upcoming season, including one that has yet to play a minute in South Carolina’s program.

Enter Seventh Woods.

The 6-2 transfer from North Carolina redshirted last season after playing the first three years of his college career in Chapel Hill, where he was a part of a team that won a national title in 2017. Woods played in a total of 94 games in three seasons for the Tar Heels and averaged 10.8 minutes on a squad in 2019 that was a number one seed in the NCAA Tournament and lost to Auburn in the Sweet 16.

“He was a rotation player on a national championship team” Martin said of Woods Monday on the College Hoops Today Podcast. “I think he’s going to have a really good year for us. He’s got the ability to make winning plays. He brings a dynamic that we didn’t have on our team. He can drive the ball and make plays for others and he’s a really good on-ball defender.”

Woods joins a South Carolina perimeter that already features two players — Jermaine Couisnard and AJ Lawson — who averaged in double-figures last season. The Gamecocks return three of their top four scorers from last year’s team that finished 18-13.

South Carolina is currently ranked 36th in the ROTHSTEIN 45 and was picked fifth in Monday’s SEC Preseason Power Rankings.
