Things To Sample

Nebraska has not had a single-digit loss season since 1991
The Huskers were a three seed in the NCAA Tournament that year, but were upset in the first round by Xavier. The Musketeers’ head coach at that time? Pete Gillen! That means that the past 35 years of Nebraska’s basketball program has featured 35 straight years of double-digit loss seasons. Fred Hoiberg’s improved to 17-0 after Tuesday’s blowout win over Oregon and will next travel to Northwestern on Saturday.

This could be a big week for Ebuka Okorie
The true college basketball junkies are well aware of Okorie’s abilities, but the casual fans may still be in the dark. That could change over the next few days. Stanford hosts North Carolina (tonight) and Duke (Saturday) back-to-back in Palo Alto in what will amplify Okorie’s burgeoning platform. The 6-2 freshman enters tonight’s game against the Tar Heels averaging 22.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.5 steals.

Vanderbilt/Texas
Are the Longhorns going to continue to perform like the team that went to Alabama last Saturday and put up 92 points in a four-point win on the road? How they respond tonight will be a good indication. Sean Miller’s squad got its season back last weekend by going on the road and getting a massive victory in Tuscaloosa, but its ability to sustain that type of effort throughout the duration of SEC play is still TBD. The Dores enter tonight’s game in Austin at 16-0. This is a golden opportunity for the Longhorns.

On The Side

  • Is BYU underrated? The Cougars are 14-1, have won 12 straight games, and their only loss was a neutral site game against UConn in Boston. Kevin Young’s squad returns to action tonight in Provo against TCU.
  • Arizona currently has seven different players averaging between 8.8 points and 14.8 points. That’s ridiculous balance. The 16-0 Wildcats will host in-state rival Arizona State tonight in Tucson.
  • Utah State’s average margin of victory in Mountain West play in 26.2 points enter tonight’s game in Logan against Nevada. Tip off is at 10 PM ET on CBS Sports Network.
  • Boston College is 201-293 (45.7 percent) since firing Al Skinner in 2010.
  • One random observation I’ve noticed the past few weeks? The caliber of games on Thursdays has been exceptionally poor.
