Things To Sample

Virginia starts a big week at Louisville
Are the Cavaliers a bonafide contender at the top of the ACC or are they just a team that’s going make the NCAA Tournament and be seeded somewhere in the middle of the bracket on Selection Sunday? We’ll have a better idea after the next 80 minutes. Ryan Odom’s squad is 14-2 and will visit Louisville tonight at the KFC Yum Center before a trip to SMU on Saturday. We’ll know a lot more about Virginia after these next two games.

UConn/Seton Hall
The Prudential Center hasn’t been a kind place to the Huskies during the past few seasons and we’ll see if that changes tonight in Newark. The Pirates have won four straight meetings against UConn at home and three of those victories have come by a combined five points. Dan Hurley’s team enters tonight’s tilt at 16-1 while Seton Hall has posted a surprising and impressive 14-2 mark under Shaheen Holloway.

Iowa State/Kansas
The Cyclones have won 14 of their 16 games this season by double figures and enter Allen Fieldhouse tonight with a perfect 16-0 record. The Jayhawks meanwhile, are 11-5 and limping a bit after Saturday’s loss at West Virginia. Star freshman Darryn Peterson (22.6 points) has inhibited this team’s chemistry with his sporadic availability, but with or without Peterson, Kansas doesn’t look like it’s on the same level as Arizona, BYU, Houston, Texas Tech, and the team it’s playing tonight — Iowa State — at the top of the Big 12. That doesn’t mean that it can’t still have magical things happen in Lawrence as we saw last week when it came back to beat TCU in dramatic fashion in overtime. Remember: Anything and everything is on the table when Bill Self’s team plays at home.

On The Side

  • Mark Pope announced on Monday that Kentucky’s Jaland Lowe will have season-ending shoulder surgery and miss the remainder of the year. A transfer from Pitt, Lowe averaged 8.0 points and was the only true point guard on the Wildcats’ roster.
  • Nebraska is 6-0 this season in games decided by six points or fewer.
  • Miami big man Ernest Udeh is averaging career-highs in both points (7.4) and rebounds (10.5) entering tonight’s game at Notre Dame. The Hurricanes are an impressive 14-2 in Year 1 under Jai Lucas.
  • After starting the season 5-0, Georgetown is just 4-7 in its last 11 games and 0-3 at home in Big East play. The Hoyas will try and get back on track tonight when they visit Creighton.
