Things To Sample
Alabama had an offensive performance to remember against BYU
The Crimson Tide have become appointment television under Nate Oats, but Thursday night’s performance in Newark usurped any previous effort that this program has had under Oats’ stewardship. Alabama scored 113 points and made an NCAA Tournament record 25 three-point shots in a 25-point win over the Cougars, which also included 27 assists on 35 made field goals. Three separate players — Mark Sears, Aden Holloway, and Chris Youngblood — made five or more three-point shots. Alabama will face Duke on Saturday in the Elite Eight as it aims to play in the Final Four for the second consecutive season.
Maryland now waits on Kevin Willard
The Terps’ first trip to the Sweet 16 in nearly a decade was overshadowed by their coach’s week in the media. Willard — who has been linked to the head coaching vacancy at Villanova — has repeatedly voiced his displeasure with Maryland’s athletic department after the man who brought him to College Park — Damon Evans — recently left his post to become the new AD at SMU. Despite a long-term contract offer on the table from the Terps that would make him one of the highest paid coaches in the sport, Willard has yet to reaffirm his commitment to Maryland, which opens the door for him to leave and return to the Big East. An official decision is expected within the next 48 hours.
Darrion Williams gave Texas Tech a vintage March Madness moment
Not even a 16-point second half deficit could deter the Red Raiders in San Francisco. A big reason for that is the 6-6 Williams, whose game-tying three-point shot at the end of the regulation and go ahead basket with less than 10 seconds to play in overtime gave Texas Tech an improbable come from behind victory over Arkansas. He finished with 20 points and nine rebounds in the 85-83 victory, which propelled this program into the Elite Eight on Saturday against Florida.
