After nearly coming to an official agreement to continue the Gavitt Games beyond the upcoming season, the Big Ten and Big East have hit an impasse, putting the future of the event in jeopardy, multiple sources told College Hoops Today.
According to a source, there is expected to be at least one more discussion between the two sides before an official decision is made, but the event continuing during the 2024-25 college basketball season now seems less likely than a few weeks ago.
The Big Ten’s recent additions of UCLA, USC, Washington, and Oregon have raised many questions regarding the future scheduling structure of the conference, especially if the league opts to add additional conference games moving forward.
The Big East has an existing challenge in place in the Big East-Big 12 Battle and was prepared to renew the Gavitt Games agreement prior to the Big Ten likely deciding to go in a different direction.
College Hoops Today reported a few weeks ago that the Gavitt Games was close to being finalized, with all 11 Big East teams set to participate during the 2024-25 season.
